ICYMI: 5 Major Talking Points from Alexander Wang’s Final Show for Balenciaga

Cady Lang

This season’s Balenciaga show was Alexander Wang‘s final one as creative director of the hallowed French house, and while his tenure has been relatively short (less than three years), it’s been nothing short of buzzworthy, thanks to his edgy designs and high-profile campaigns.

For his final show, however, Wang pulled out all the stops for a swan song that won’t be soon forgotten. From special runway guests to a cheeky twist to his signature runway bow, here are five reasons why this designer knows how to go out with a bang.

The location.

He held the show at a chapel on the Rue de Sèvres in Paris. Inside the church, the catwalk was divided by long pools, lending a pure, spa-like vibe to the show.

The soundtrack.

Wang opened the show with Biggie‘s “Going Back to Cali” playing over strings, followed by tracks from Snoop and Tupac. Props to Wang for bringing the East Coast–West Coast rap feud to Paris.

The models.

Taylor Swift has her girl squad, and Olivier Rousteing has his Balmain army—but we want to be a part of Alexander Wang’s crew. Zoe Kravitz, Suki Waterhouse, and Riley Keough all took to the runway with Wang favorites Anna Ewers, Lexi Boling, and Hanne Gaby Odiele. Talk about #squadgoals.

The accessories.

The all-white ensembles at the show were the perfect juxtaposition of delicate and downtown, but it’s the accessories that will be next season’s street-style bait. Balenciaga might be known for its ubiquitous motorcycle bags, but Wang sent silky backpacks down the runway along with fringed barrel bags and totes. Did you know that you needed a satin fanny pack? You do now!

The final bow.

Wang took a selfie on his final walk, with his trademark exuberance. Keep living your best life, Alex. We’ve enjoyed the ride.
