Your Complete Guide to Nailing Fall’s Massive ’70s Trend

Your Complete Guide to Nailing Fall’s Massive ’70s Trend

In case you weren’t already aware, fall fashion is headed for a full-on 1970s revival, as dozens of designers are riffing on classic boho shapes and fabrics including bell sleeves, flared jeans, fringe, wide-leg pants, floppy hats, suede, and peasant dresses.

At Tibi, Burberry, and Zimmermann, brown suede ruled the runway, as did billowing peasant dresses, which also showed up at Chloé and BCBG. And let’s not forget Céline‘s exaggerated flared sleeves, which have already launched a hundred high-street ripoffs.

Perhaps the biggest ’70s silhouette we’re seeing this fall, though, is the wide-leg and super-flared pant, which cropped up in nearly every fall collection, prompting us to seriously consider shelving our skinnies for a season.

Even if you’re not the kind of girl who usually embraces boho, there’s no avoiding fashion’s haute hippie mood for fall—so prepare your wardrobe accordingly with our complete guide. Remember: If it was worn during Haight Ashbury’s heyday, you can bet it’ll be worn during Fall 2015.

With fringe suede jackets that will throw you straight back to the '70s popping up everywhere from Saint Laurent to Topshop, and heavy suede skirts all over the high street, this is one of the strongest themes for fall 2015. Think: A brown suede maxi dress paired with a floppy hat and boots, or a fringed jacket over a peasant dress.

Chloé, Zimmermann, and a host of high street stores are bringing back the peasant style dress for fall. Wear yours with knee-high boots for a full haute hippie revival, and layer a suede jacket over the top when the weather starts to cool.

Heavy, suede fringing is a major theme throughout the fall 2015 collections at Saint Laurent, Burberry, and fast fashion brands like Zara and ASOS. Not feeling it? Softer iterations of the trend are also big, with Elizabeth and James, Issa, and more brands adding light fringing to the hems of dresses, pants, and jackets.

We're seeing exaggerated flared cuffs at Céline and Ellery, and softer flared sleeves at J Mendel and BCBG Max Azria. For a full-volume approach, pair a bell-sleeve top with flared jeans, or make it modern with an envelope skirt.
