When it comes to tracking the ebb and flow of trends, there are few that manage to stand the test of time quite as well as velvet (Proof: The material has been around since the Middle Ages, and we’re still wearing it). While it never exactly goes out of fashion, it does seem to come and go on designer’s radars, with many either avoiding or embracing the rich material depending on the season.
For Fall/Winter 2012, velvet was fully embraced, as a number of designers including Altuzarra, Gucci, Carven, Tadashi Shoji, Rebecca Taylor, Diane von Furstenberg, and Lanvin espoused the the plush life and sent a variety of velvet looks down the runway in strikingly modern ways. While some incorporated the royal material into tailored silhouettes like structured blazers and slim trousers trousers, others played off velvet’s inherently regal nature with flowing evening skirts and dresses. Either way, we’ve got a serious crush on velvet this season, and highlighted 20 must-have pieces perfect for adding a touch of luxe into any winter look.
