Old school Americana reigned supreme at the William Rast show, titled “New America”. Perhaps Justin Timberlake and co. are focusing on the adage that you have to look back on where you’ve been to know where you will go.
Denim and leather made up the majority of the collection- and what could be more American than that? Rivets punctured the sleeves on jackets and the fringe on the cowboy boots dangled low enough to graze the runway. And, while the stars were taken out of an American flag motif, spangles were added everywhere imaginable.
The looks either embraced reinvention or replicated vintage looks to the extreme. An acid grey denim mini skirt with beaded appliqué looked like it could have come straight out of the thrift store. The pieces that shined were the ones that pushed the envelope. Simple t-shirts were given an injection of the 80’s with power shoulders. Sheer button-ups were also padded to the extreme.
Hopefully with this glimpse of what’s new, they will push it further and newer. They already have the all-star audience listening. Anna and Carine in the same row, anyone?
