As a self-proclaimed bookworm/nerd, I’ve always been in love with words. I read through the entire Young Adult section of Waldenbooks (ah, I miss that old 80s bookstore chain) by the time I was 8 years old and was onto such classics as Pride & Prejudice by the time I was 9. Yeah, I didn’t get out much as a kid.
Anyway, this obsession with the written word has carried me through to adulthood and remains as strong as ever to this day. That’s why I was so charmed by this little story on nymag.com in which they ask various designers to describe their upcoming fall 09 collections in one word (kind of like that annoying Facebook “note” thing going around right now except…not annoying). Here, some of my favorite answers:
“SURVIVOR” –Diane Von Furstenberg
“CARNIVORES” –Alexander Wang
“LAYERED” –Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Proenza Schouler
“PROUSTIAN” –Anna Sui
“NIGHTLIFE” –Chris Benz
“INTERIORS” –Derek Lam
“ABERDEEN” –Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Rodarte
“ROCKNROLLA” –Phillip Lim
“MENAGE A TROIS” –John Whitledge, Trovata
“CRYSTALARIUM” –Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai, Vena Cava
“MOONLIGHT” –Narciso Rodriguez
“SOFT-SCULPTURE” –Behnaz Sarafpour
“FANCY” –Thakoon Panichgul
“PARALLAX” –Francisco Costa, Women’s Creative Director, Calvin Klein Collection
“LUSTROUS” –Oscar de la Renta
“MINIMALISM” –Carlos Miele
Makes me anticipate seeing these collections all the more. Now, if someone asked me what I was feeling about fashion week in one word, my first thoughts would be along the lines of: deathbytaxifightsinthefreezingcoldwearingsixinchheels. Or, you know. Something like that.
