Say what you will about the straightlaced Victorian era—technically lasting from 1837 until Queen Victoria’s death in 1901—but there’s no arguing with the fact that the historic period had a lasting impact on fashion, as evidenced by modern designers who regularly churn out collections that feature signature facets of the generation.

This was especially true on Fall 2015 runways, where designers including Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, Miu Miu, and Chanel tapped into the dark romance of the Victorian era yet put their own modern spin on voluminous sleeves, demure high-neck ruffled blouses, and plenty of lace, velvet, and chiffon.

To avoid looking like you’re testing out an early Halloween costume, we suggest sticking to one articulate piece, and keeping the rest of your look streamlined and modern—an easy feat given the amount of chic Victorian-inspired clothing hitting shelves now.

Here, we’ve rounded up 15 pieces clearly inspired by 19th century England, but will look killer circa right now.
