Fashion has certainly had quite a year. And while we love the drama, scandals and over-the-top personalities, at the end of the day it’s all about design — and we’ve certainly seen plenty of design talent in the last 12 months.

From top designers who have managed to surprise us once again to those who are relatively new on the fashion scene, we love ’em all. So as we count down to the new year, let’s also count down the best of 2011’s fashion designers. Click through the slide show to see our top 10 picks of the year!

So maybe every year is Karl Lagerfeld's year, but considering he announced the launch of yet another design label and participated in a host of collaborations, we've gotta give it to Uncle Karl ... again.

Sarah Burton not only designed one of the most viewed wedding dresses of all time (Kate Middleton's, in case you didn't know), she is the creative director of Alexander McQueen and won this year's designer of the year award at the British Fashion Awards. Bravo, Sarah!

Oh Tom Ford. Between his new beauty line and revealing documentary, we all feel like we've gotten to know him a little better this year. And he has truly staged quite the comeback, earning himself a spot on our top 10 list.

Jewelry aficionados everywhere will probably agree that Pamela Love has created some of the most lust-worthy pieces we've seen in a long time. Her innovative approach to design and a spot as a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist makes Love a serious talent to keep your eye on.

Considering Prabal Gurung launched his first collection in February 2009, the design guru has come a long way. Gurung's purple infused spring/summer 2012 collection was a favorite amongs fashion insiders and celebs alike. His designs can be spotted on red carpets across the country and he more than earned his place in the top 10 designers of 2011.

Yigal Azrouël is one of those designers who sneaks up on you and takes you by surprise. Every garment is perfectly made and his use of color is unmatched. With the likes of André Leon Talley stepping out to attend Azrouël's spring/summer 2012 collection, he is absolutely a designer to watch and covet.

Rebecca Minkoff is one of New York's finest. From her beautiful handbags to her colorful, whimsical apparel collection -- which she showed at fashion week for the first time in September, -- Minkoff hits all the right notes and knows exactly how to appeal to a girl's most fashionable desires.

No top 10 list is complete without Marc Jacobs. From the numerous rumors debating his move to Dior to a stunning runway collection for Louis Vuitton (which included Kate Moss taking a turn down the runway), Jacobs managed to maintain his position at the top of the design heap during 2011.
