Spring Trend: Slip Dresses

While several ’90s-inspired trends made waves on spring runways, it was the humble slip dress that was the most ubiquitous.

A surprising amount of top designers showcased the simple silhouette—characterized by skinny spaghetti straps and a straight-cut bodice—in various lengths and colors, all with a distinctly minimal look and feel, just as they did in the ’90s when they were popularized by Calvin Klein, Carolyn Bessette, and (to a grungier extent) Courtney Love.

While Isabel Marant took a slightly younger and more dayime-ready route for spring 2014, showing black short slip dresses with embellished flat sandals, Max Mara and DKNY opted for a slightly more sophisticated take, featuring sexy, silky, nighttime versions in nude and red, respectively.
