Last week, we had the honor of meeting the experts at John Frieda who showed us first hand how to style our tresses to perfection. After the demonstrations were over, we got a chance to catch up with the man himself who started the hair empire and the battle against frizz. We were on the quest for achieving the perfect locks, but Frieda quickly told us that it was almost impossible to say because of the endless possibilities of styles and textures unique to each person. However, he did share with us two very important tidbits of advice that every woman should follow when styling her hair.

So what are the most important things to do when deciding on a hair style?
Rule #1: Understand Your Face Shape
“By far the most important thing about anybody’s hair is understanding their face shape–that’s key,” says Frieda. “Most people don’t really look at their face shape when they come to choose a style or understand how to wear their hair. That’s really the most important thing. So really look at your hair. Look at your face. Look at your face without your hair. Take your hair off your face and actually look at two mirrors and really try to understand what suits you.”
Rule #2: Live by products!
“It is so important to find and use products that specifically work for you,” says Frieda. “I can tell you that any professional, any hair dresser will not blowdry somebody’s hair without using styling products–you can’t get the right effect. You need products, and you need products that are right for you. Research, look, try things, use them in the correct way, and you’ll start to understand your own regime.”

I NEED A GOOD PRODUCT,FOR MY HAIR,MY HAIR IS DRY AND BRITTLE.HELP
Look at your face shape and use products that are right for you. Okay, where is the advice in this. It would have been a FAR better article had he actually given advice on what styles suit what face types or what products are suited to certain hair types or styles. Worthless article.
Neutrogena Deep Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner then use the Deep Recovery Hair Mask (from the same product line) 2-3 times per week. I had two chemical processes done to my hair and my hair was FRIED and really dry and felt so fragile and brittle. After using Neutrogena Deep Moisture product line for about a month, my hair is back to normal!
I totally agree! I also think that people don’t necessarily need to use products to make their hair beautiful!
wish he would have shown examples of face and hair styles would have helped a lot
Hi John

I have to have shampoo for color treated hair, if I want my color to last. The problem is that none of these shampoos give my fine hair body. Any suggestions

Amanda, I have the same problem. You almost need something heavy to help weigh it down a little. I use Garnier shampoo and conditioner. I use the dry damaged hair type. I know….over the counter, but it works great!! Also, forget the products, it really screws with our type of hair. Blow dry straight then use the hair spray by Garnier.
I have silver hair and occasionally get a yellowish tinge to various pieces on the top and back of my hair. What’s the best solution for removing this? I’ve tried about every shampoo for gray hair on the market. Is there anything that will remove this or protect it from getting like this once it is removed?
April, shampoos won’t help thinning hair. When women lose hair its usually either due to hormones or vitamin deficiency. If you have recently been thru a hormonal change (pregnancy, menopause, birth control pills, shots, etc) you may want to ask your doc to do a complete blood panel work up and see if there is a hormonal imbalance. continued
if you don’t suspect hormonal imbalance, try taking a B Complex supplement, vitamin C and some iron. All three of them are necessary for proper vitamin benefit. If vitamin/mineral deficiency is the cause, you will notice an improvement after about 3 or 4 weeks, and notice regrowth around your hairline in about 6 weeks
One and Only Argun Oil is AWESOME and dirt cheap at Sally Beauty Supply!
Try a clarifying shampoo. If the yellowing is from mineral buildup (like iron) from water, a clarifying shampoo will help. Also, Paul Mitchell has a great shampoo called Awapuhi shampoo which is gentle and also good at removing buildup.
You could try a sulfate free shampoo.Sulfates tend to remove more oil from the hair than a person generally needs removed,so they can dry out your hair and cause it to become too brittle.I use a great sulfate free and organic shampoo which you can pick up at Walgreens for pretty cheap called Daisy. They also have an great deep conditioning treatment
Go natural, deary. The most natural and abundant product available is urine; yours preferabley. Before you shower wet your hair and massage the scalp, shampoo as you always do and you will notice your hair to be shiney, moisterized, and more manageable. Word of warning stay away from hair growth products and money grubbing services.
Moisturize the natural way. Urine! It contains many nutrients. You will see and feel the difference.
If you want beautiful hair, you need to try Long N’ Strong that is found at http://www.rushindustries.com
It will give you longer and thicker hair in no time. It will also help to give you a better texture. My hair is so thick that I look like a lion.
eww urine?!!? is that really good hygene? i have hte same problem but my hair also tends to get alot of split ends! even thought i cut it often and it also tends to get really oily with in a day after i take a shower.

I don’t want to sound like a commercial for John Freida, but I use it, so it was the reason I read this ‘article’. I have long, fine hair, can’t use too much conditioner or it gets greasy, and fine hair conditioners make it fly-away. John Freida for blonde hair is the 1st duo that actually works, and I’ve never has so many people pet my hair!
Dawn try to get a clarifying treatment(ie.Malibu treatment) at your local salon. Then with a once weekly clarifying shampoo that should do the trick to cleanse and maintain. If you take alot of meds or supplements this tends to happen to the hair or if you are not rinsing properly so rinse well and be healthy.
Try Nioxin–I have been a stylist for over 18 years and this is the one product line that, if used as directed, will help this issue. To clarify this however I have to say that Nioxin as a manufacturer does not claim to regrow hair but in my experience it works beautifully. The line is not cheap ($50 for starter kit) but worth it.
Diane’s reply is WRONG-that’s why your hair is doing what it does. Garnier is garbage. First of all if you’re brushing your hair wet that’s a huge sin. The little pieces are breakage from lack of protein and/or your diet. Try Matrix Amplify products and Joico’s K-Pak treatment-it’s amazing and smells great. Professional products are worth it!
Pureology is possibly the best product for color retention EVER. They have a volumizing line. The natural enemies for color are sun and wind but the chemical ones are DEA and sodiums. Look for products that are free of both and get a refresher treatment inbetween touch-ups. Is it highlighted too? Then get deep moisture treatments as well.
So Silver from Matrix Essentials is an oldie but a goodie. Blue Malva from Aveda can be a little strong but dilutable with plain shampoo.
have anyone tried the natural old indian scalp therapy. care for scalp is important, then watch for growth later.
try these combination…neem powder, henna powder, amla powder and curry leave powder. Take 1 table spoon each and mix it with luke warm water till a paste is formed.Add 1 table spoon of olive oil to the mixture and let it overnight. Use
Use the paste the next day.Apply it to the scalp and especially at the balding region. Leave the paste for atleast 3 to 4 hours. Do this every week. You see the result by the 4 th week of application.
You get good volume of hair and a good volume is what every one wants.
What is up with the urine comments? It’s not funny or helpful. It’s disgusting and will not help. The first two comments to this post are right on because hair grows from your blood circulation and diet. The one product I endorse is Nioxin. As a hairdresser for 18+ years I have seen it work time & time again.

IF you use the link at the bottom of the article then you can get your face shape and the hairstyle for it
where can you buy all the ingredients for the Indian scalp therapy? want to try this.
my hair is dry because i put color a lot on it,what should tretment i could do like some home remedies or what so ever, pls reply me back.thank you…
URINE? That is beyond disgusting and it won’t help at all. Putting nutrients on dead hair does nothing, you have to take vitamins, fish oil, and silica.
yeah! it would of help if he would of told what kind of hair styles go with what kind of face types…i personally would like to know…
hey i hav used dat many tyms..it helps dandruff nd also helps da hair to grow stronger….but it gives a maroon colour to ur hair..its okay for people wid black or dark brown hair but 4 ppl wid blonde hair…I DONT THINK SO!!!
Though I have a problem with my hair but to think of urine im my hair is unthinkable. The problem is that my hair is not only splitting but slowly finishing from behind. I have had this problem before and was told that it could be the creams that I use. What can I do? It grows a bit and before you know it, it slowly coming off.

As a hairdresser of 44 years, you are very right about nioxin. I have went to classes on nioxin for 10 years and I have seen what it does. On my own hair, I have used it for ever, because I have thyroid disease and my hair was coming out badly. That is when I found out about nioxin and started using it and have never stopped.

That picture of the three of them is so gross – sexual displays are left for the hotel room not business promotions.

Apple Cidar Vinegar (However, it might smell a little)
Try directly applying to scalp and leave for 30 min. – 1 hour
(or if you want, dilute a little with water)
You gotta be kidding! Most people see nothing sexual in that picture. Karen – what is YOUR hangup girl?

I SEE NOTHING SEXUAL THERE.
I have a package of Neem, Amla and Aritha. Neem, according to the box is more like a antibacterial and cleansing powder also good for oily hair. Amla prevents hair loss and premature greying of hair; Aritha is a natural shampoo. I don’t mind a conditioner on my hair for 3-4 hours but I’m a bit concerned about Neem on my very dry chemically treated.

you could shave it off. not really. one thing to do would be wash it in vinegar every once and a while. sounds gross but it beats urine and gets nasty product build up off your hair.

How about weight-styling along with hairstyling?? one could look at hypnosis to eat healthy and lose weight. I highly recommend it. Try this award winning hypnosis audio here: http://goodkarmatoday.info
Karen, I don’t see any photograph that exhibits a sexual display of any sort! Judging people by a mere picture only portrays you as a discriminatory, uncouth and ignorant person! I am sure that is not the image you wish to present yourself with, but then again, what do I know!?
