“Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.” —Elle Woods, 2001

Elle’s famous quote has become my motto this winter after seeing the number of street-style stars who have managed to transform the typically cloying color into a badass option for those of us sick of relying on all-black everything this time of year. In the form of a turtleneck or oversized coat, the color makes a cool statement that even fashion minimalists can get behind.

In fact, pink’s always been a personal favorite of mine because of its versatility. Using, say, rose as a neutral can soften up a darker look, or give it an unexpected cool-girl touch (something Swedish brands like Acne figured out long ago). A pair of blush kicks with an all-black ensemble? Yes. Suede biker jackets never looked better in fuchsia, and there’s something effortless about oversized, swingy coats in cotton-candy shades. I’m also a strong proponent of the monochromatic pink look. The color comes in so many different shades that you can really have fun mixing them.
