We’ve all seen the endless stream of street style stars wearing head-to-toe color with a panache that seems almost superhuman. Turquoise, orange, red, chartreuse — all together! Well, don’t be daunted by color. It’s almost universally flattering to have a little brightness near your face, and with the right pieces, it’s a snap to put together.
Start with a colorful bottom-up if you like wearing pants, jeans, a skirt or shorts. I like a great pair of straight trousers that move easily from work to play. Chunky sandals help you leave the length on the pants long while still being able to walk confidently and comfortably throughout your day.
Now, here’s the secret weapon of the look: the silk blouse. It looks equally good tucked in or pulled out, buttoned all the way up or left loose to reveal a bit of tanned decolletage. If adding a complementary color is too much for you, pick a black and white print to offset the bright bottom. Otherwise, go bold! Blue and red, pink and orange — the sky is the limit on pairing. Prints help break up the color-block effect while still adding a punch.
An oversize clutch is de rigeur for the fashion set, and there’s a reason why: It’s shockingly versatile, holding everything you need for a day at work but taking you straight out to dinner and drinks without changing. Add a bold necklace and a skinny belt to help break out the blocks of color, and you are set. Just don’t blame us when people beg to take your photo.
