Frédérique Harrel (aka Freddie) is a 28-year-old stylist, blogger, and fashion marketing guru hailing from Paris, but based in London. She’s one of our favorite up-and-coming street style stars, with an Instagram following of 51,000, and a distinctive sense of style that makes her stand out at Fashion Week. We caught up with the It-Brit to find out the London labels she loves, what basics she’s buying for winter, and to talk about her career in the fashion business.
How do you begin your day?
Checking the news and what happened on social media, from the comfort of my bed.
What does an average day at work look like?
Lots of emails, a very messy desk—because I’m always working on a thousand things at the same time—meetings and/or Skype conferences, and I always have a WhatsApp tab open. I work on my own so it’s a great way to keep in touch with my friends and to not feel too lonely.
How do you describe your style?
I always refer to it as a burrito! I love almost everything, as long as it’s unflattering and crazy looking! More seriously, I love dressing like a boy; I love brogues, suits and man-sy shirts. But I also love bold colors, crazy accessories, high heels and dresses, so my style is like a mix of tons of different things wrapped into one: like a burrito!
What was the last thing you bought?
A pair of platforms brogues from Zara.
What’s your signature scent?
Parisienne by YSL, because I’ll always remain Parisian at heart.
What’s the one thing we’d never catch you wearing?
White boots or Uggs.
What up-and-coming British brand do you think everyone should know?
Camilla Elphick—her shoes are what dreams are made of.
Is there a particular pair of boots you’ll be wearing all winter?
I can’t get enough of these snake boots from Urban Outfitters.
And a coat?
I need a yellow coat like this! I simply need one!
What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about fashion while on the job?
It’s nothing serious. I use it as a weapon to channel my various personalities; it has to be fun.
What fashion trend do you struggle to get behind?
Fedora hats. I simply can’t do hats!
If money were no object, what would you be wearing?
A lot more designer pieces. London is such a great hub, people here are so talented and come up with the best fashion.
Do you use any apps to edit your photos?
Lightroom. I only edit the colors and light. I never edit myself.
What’s the layering trick every woman should try this winter?
I love a boyfriend shirt thrown over flares or wide-leg trousers, topped off with an oversized knit.
