While working on an upcoming new product story, Marina, my trusty beauty intern, made an exciting discovery: Donna Karan‘s vintage cult perfumes have been re-released. Marina’s reflections on this infamous fragrance are below:
“Apparently, while my generation was busy spraying itself with Angel and Cool Water, more sophisticated perfume lovers were busy mourning the departure of Donna Karan’s iconic Chaos fragrance. Released in 1996 and discontinued in 2002, Chaos could only be found on E-bay for the past six years, with small bottles and even sample vials going for hundreds of dollars.
However, this has all just changed: Donna Karan is relaunching an exclusive collection of classic fragrances from the past and present, which include Donna Karan Essence Collection, Signature, Black Cashmere and Chaos. It turns out that there is even a romantic story behind Chaos: while traveling on his own, Donna Karan’s husband, Stephan Weiss, was inspired. He created a perfume signifying his journey and dedicated it to his wife. Presented in 1996, Chaos stopped being produced after his death in 2001.
Although I may be too young to remember the original Chaos, I can certainly appreciate it’s perfectly harmonious mix of incense, wood and spices. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the perfume has received a full repackaging and comes in a sleek black bottle that will look much cooler on my dresser than that Angel bottle ever did!”
