This year was filled with countless red carpets and events, giving us ample opportunity to style-stalk our favorite stars and, of course, analyze the severe fashion evolution we noticed taking place with throughout 2012.
Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus are at the top our celebrity transformations list, as they both ditched their trademark styles in favor of edgy new looks, while A-list actresses like Kristen Stewart and Jennifer Lawrence showed off their ability to step out of their comfort zone and take some red carpet risks with big payoffs. And of course, as is the case every year, there were a few style shifts that left us totally baffled (the ever-changing looks of Christina Aguilera, for one).
In honor of a major year in celebrity fashion, click through the slideshow above for the biggest style transformations of 2012!
Miley Cyrus: Cyrus bid farewell to her teenybopper image this year, chopping off her wavy red locks with celebrity hairstylist Chris McMillan (the man responsible for the infamous '90s "Rachel" cut from "Friends"). As her hair got shorter and blonder, her style got way more daring. Basically, Cyrus discovered the crop top in 2012, and never looked back.
Kim Kardashian: Gone are the days when Kim Kardashian exclusively rocked Herve Leger bandage dresses and ill-advised colorful ensembles (see Gucci, above left) designed to make her look like Princess Jasmine. Instead, she allowed her new beau Kanye West to determine her style (and, memorably, clean out her closet on reality TV). The results? High-style, if occasionally ill-fitting, ensembles from designers like Stephane Rolland, Givenchy, and Céline. Folks may not be thrilled with her new look (and eternally slicked-back hair), but her accessory game has continued to thrive—it seems Kim has a Birkin and a Phantom in every color (and exotic skin).
Anne Hathaway: Thanks in part to a dramatic new pixie cut and a 25-pound weight loss for her role in "Les Misérables," Hathaway managed to reinvent herself on the red carpet in 2012. Once known for simple girly garb, Hathaway has clearly become way more interested in fashion, turning up in bold names like Tom Ford (above right) and Givenchy.
Kristen Stewart: Between "Twilight" and "On The Road," Kristen Stewart was a constant red carpet presence this year. Thanks to her stylist Tara Swennen, she's always looked cute, but 2012 was a year full of fashion risks for Stewart. Sheer was the name of the game for the actress all year long, culminating in a racy Zuhair Murad jumpsuit worn at the final "Twilight" premiere.
Selena Gomez: Let's get one thing straight—Selena Gomez has always been adorable, but this year, her style grew up right along with her. While she used to rock cute, age-appropriate looks from brands like alice + olivia, she's expanded her repertoire to include more fashion-forward pieces like the peplum dress above, and mature red-carpet gowns.
Jennifer Lawrence: We've had a style crush on Jennifer Lawrence ever since the stunning red Calvin Klein Collection number she wore to the 2011 Oscars, but she impressed us even more this year. The "Hunger Games" star showed off her darker side in 2012, opting for deep brown locks and menswear-inspired pieces. We can't wait to see what she pulls out this awards season, where she's already snagged nominations for her role in "Silver Linings Playbook."
Taylor Swift: The country-pop princess kicked off this year with her first Vogue cover, so it's only fitting that she evolved into a more comfortable, graceful red carpet fixture. Often choosing to wear her signature curly locks straight, Swift has been more minimalistic with her fashion choices as of late. One thing is always consistent: Her trademark accessory is her red lip.
Rihanna: Rihanna's always been somewhat of a chameleon, but this year she noticeably sharpened her style in designers like Stella McCartney and Calvin Klein (above right). Given her unpredictable nature, we're not sure how she'll dress next year, but we're hoping she keeps up the glam.
Christina Aguilera: With a fuller figure and a penchant for constantly changing hair, Christina Aguilera didn't undergo one transformation in 2012, but several. Between pink hair extensions, purple streaks, a shiny blonde bob and her odd obsession with fascinators, we never knew which Christina we were going to get.
Demi Lovato: While pop star and "X Factor" host Demi Lovato once favored casual, tomboy looks to go along with her Disney persona, it seems her high-profile TV gig has her channeling sexy celebrities like the Kardashians with bodycon dresses and super-straight hair.
