Update: Bummer, a rep from NBC confirmed this afternoon that Beyoncé isn’t being considered for a role in “The Wiz.” Well, that rumor was great while it lasted.
Big news, Beyoncé fans: Bey might be in talks about taking on a leading role in the upcoming production of “The Wiz.”
As you’ve probably already heard, NBC’s next live-event musical will be an adaptation the 1975 classic that’s an African-American retelling of “The Wizard of Oz” (Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, and Richard Pryor starred in the movie version) and now E! Online reports that Bey’s in talks to take on the role of Glinda the Good Witch.
The deal hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if she did accept the role Bey would join Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige who have already signed on to star.
Since she played Deena Jones in “Dreamgirls” nine long years ago, we’ve been waiting for the day Bey would return to the musical movie scene, but—according to E!—“Orange is the New Black” star, Uzo Aduba is also being considered for the role of Glinda, so it’ll really be a win-win situation no matter how the casting pans out.
Unlike NBC’s previous live musicals “The Sound of Music” and ‘Peter Pan,” it’s been reported that the network is looking to break out of the super-traditional format and get creative. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the production, along with Cirque du Soleil, so you can bet plenty of acrobatic theatrics will be present. In an interesting move, the same production will reportedly be mounted on Broadway as a revival during the 2016-17 season.
“The Wiz” is set to air December 3 on NBC.
