Apartment hunting itself is never fun. Discovering boutiques in what could be your new neighborhood, however, most certainly is. To that end, Maleeka, a Boerum Hill shop in Brooklyn, NY, caught my magpie’s eye with chunky jeweled necklaces bedecking window mannequins. That the mannequins were wearing chic geometric printed silk shirtdresses was another plus.
I ventured in, only to find tray after red velvet tray of colorful earrings that perfectly suit my penchant for antique-looking, ethnic jewelry. There were stunning large but slender gold crescents with pearls and filigree to strike a Turkish tone, while heavier, gem-laden earrings were fit for a Bollywood princess. Subtler, enameled studs were just the type of unusual earring hard to find but highly covetable. One pair, white with black detail, was like a hieroglyphic sketch of flax leaves, folded over for an interesting shape.
Owner Maleeka Ahmed also stocks the shop with fabrics and clothes in addition to the jewelry that enticed me. So, where do I go for new drop cloths and curtains? Check!
