Dimitrios Tsioumas of New York City’s Mizu Salon was recently selected as the Hairstylist of the Year at the North American Hairstyling Awards. If you’ve never heard of the NAHAs, they are basically the Oscars of professional hairstylists. Since he’s the “mane” man at the moment, we decided to take advantage of his expertise and get hairstyling tips for Fall.
The Grunge-Influenced Ponytail
“Think back to the early 90s and experiment with texture,” says Dimitrios. “The grungy-inspired ponytail combines sexy, sleek glam with agitated, raw texture.”
Step 1: To get the look, start with hair that is wavy and a little messy.
Step 2: Next, create a center part down the front half of your head.
Step 3: Backcomb the back section of your head to get high volume at the crown.
Step 4: Gather your hair at the nape of your neck and put it into a low ponytail.
Dimitrios states, “Fringes or bangs have had their revival the past few years. This includes long, blunt and ‘bed-headish’ messy.” When wearing this style, Dimitrios reminds us to put the straightening and curling irons away. “Think ‘lived-in.’ You want the style to look unkempt, which gives it a sexy, care-free feeling.”
To give your bangs a naturally tousled look, blow dry them when wet, but instead of using a comb or a brush, ruffle the hair with your fingers. You should also lay off the styling products, so it looks undone.
