Considering as much as Americans eat, you’d think we already consume all of the necessary vitamins and minerals for a healthy body. But sadly, we don’t always make the right dietary choices. That’s where supplements come in. Not only do these pill fighters add an extra boost to our diet, but many provide the essentials for healthy skin, hair and nails. We recently spoke with Dr. Frank Lipman, integrative and functional medicine physician and founder of Eleven Eleven Wellness Center, about what our diets are missing.

Remember when we were forced to take our Flintstone vitamin every day growing up? (Man, those were good.) As an adult, you should also be taking a daily multivitamin. Even if you sustain a healthy diet, consistent exercise routine and get the recommended six to eight hours of sleep, your body may still be missing vital nutrients. “I recommend taking a good quality multivitamin, fish oil, vitamin D and a probiotic every day,” Dr. Lipman told us. And his Daily Dose ($99, kit provides all of these key nutrients. Served in on-the-go packets, you are recommended to take two packets a day — one with breakfast and another with lunch or dinner.

But if you’re looking to solve a specific problem, find out which vitamin will work wonders below.

Treat Acne
Use a fish oil supplement to treat acne. Because it is high in omega-3 fatty acids, it reduces redness and inflammation, regulates hormone production and can even reduce stress (a common cause of acne). Vitamin A also helps by limiting the production of sebum, an oily fat that gets clogged in the hair follicles, forming acne.

Treat Dry Skin
Go with a Vitamin E supplement if you suffer from dry skin. The vital nutrient creates proper cell functioning, providing adequate moisture.

Treat Oily Skin
Dr. Lipman recommends taking Vitamin A if you suffer from oily skin. This vitamin normalizes the level of oil in the skin by working against androgens that are responsible for oil creation in human skin tissue.

Get Longer Hair
Vitamin C promotes hair growth by making collagen that is needed in the dermis of your scalp. It is there that the arrector pili muscle promotes strong hair growth.

Get Thicker Hair
For thicker strands, go with biotin, or Vitamin H, as it is also known. The vitamin thickens hair by repairing brittleness and split ends.

Get Stronger Nails
If you find your nails are brittle, you may be deficient in iron. And if you have white spots on your nails, poor growth and inflamed cuticles, you may be lacking zinc in your diet. And finally, take a B-12 supplement if you have dry and darkened nails.

For a double wammy, try Keranique Daily Essentials ($29.95,, a dietary supplement that creates healthy-looking hair and strong nails. The capsules are filled with IBA2,  a nutrient that absorbs vital vitamins for longer and stronger hair and nails.
