My Fashions Night Out: A Chat with Marchesas Georgina Chapman & Keren Craig

Many shops celebrated exclusive product launches last night during Fashion’s Night Out with glasses of bubbly and music. Through the thick crowd on Fifth Avenue it was easy to hear the music bumping from Sephora as they celebrated Marchesa’s Keren Craig and Georgina Chapman’s premiere fragrance, Parfum d’Extase, exclusive to Sephora.

The balconies showcased several Marchesa gowns that have been worn by celebrities on the red carpet while viewers could sip on cocktails and have their picture taken in a life-size Marchesa dress cutout with the two designers.

I got the chance to talk with Keren Craig above the Sephora crowd, right in front of a gorgeous red silk gown worn by Rachel McAdams at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

The perfume is a mix of iris, freesia, violet leaves, jasmine, and musk, and the fragrance is unexpected from the usual sweet and frilly gowns but extremely delightful. It comes in an elegantly designed bottle that takes inspiration from Marchesa’s crystallized handbags and clutches. “The entire bottle is faceted with crystals and then there is a crystal on top,” said Craig. “I hope it’s something you want to put on your dresser or table and look at.”

For Craig and Chapman, the idea behind the scent was to create a feeling of transformation and for women to always feel beautiful while wearing it, which they also portrayed in the advertisement campaign. “For us, it’s something we’ve always wanted to do,” said Craig. “I was so excited, we’ve talked about doing it for years but it was about finding the right partners. And Sephora we feel is such a leader in the beauty world so we thought they were the perfect people to do the fragrance with and it’s been a great partnership.”

To capture the iris roots in the fragrance Chapman designed a flowy, pale lavender gown for the ad with model Romee Strijd. “She opened our last show and we thought she was a great muse for us and she has the most beautiful face,” said Craig.

With the hype about their premiere fragrance there could be a chance they will offer other beauty products. “We would love it,” said Craig. “We’re girls designing for women. We have fun putting on makeup, we have fun putting on perfume, dresses, shows, so yes hopefully in the future.”

Parfum d’Extase is available for purchase from Sephora in three different sizes and retails for $25 to $85.
