If you’re anything like us, you’re probably on your second straight binge-watch of Orange is the New Black’s awesome third season. And the character that’s been stealing the show (and our hearts)? Definitely the charming, hilarious Stella Carlin, played by former Australian MTV VJ (and face of Maybelline), Ruby Rose. That hair! Those tattoos! Those lips! She’s so perfect that it’s almost hard to believe she’s a real person.
This is truly Ruby’s breakout role in the US, and she’s been using her platform for good. From speaking out about issues surrounding gender identity to raising money for youth mental health charities, Rose is not just stunning on the outside: she’s gorgeous on the inside, too.
Engaged to model Phoebe Dahl (with whom she has adopted many dogs and cats) Ruby is a phenomenally talented actress, TV host, designer, DJ and singer who inspires us daily with both her unique take on beauty and her boldly lived life. How could she NOT be our Woman Crush Wednesday? Let’s take a look back at her most iconic hair and makeup looks from before she entered Lichfield.

Before she was your favorite OITNB star, Ruby Rose was an Australian model-turned-MTV VJ—and this was the look that made her famous. We love her blunt, black bangs, smudgy eyeliner and bronzed complexion.

Never one to shy away from taking risks with her look, Ruby styled her growing-out bangs by pushing them up, up and away from her face in a chic pompadour. Accessories with barely-there makeup and flawless brows, this is a perfect lesson in how to wear an edgier style.

In 2009, Ruby made waves by chopping off her signature long, dark hair—but it was so much more than a haircut to her. "I had so many knockbacks, having short hair," she told the Guardian of her modeling days. "I always thought: I'm never gonna get to where I want to get unless I start looking more feminine. So I grew my hair, got a hosting gig on MTV looking like that, and probably spent six months doing MTV before I was like, "I need to go back to who I am." I cut my hair off and kind of got more in tune with who I was."

Her pixie is worn curly with a streak of platinum fading into pink; we especially love that she rocked this with a totally sparkly gold lame gown. Never listen to anyone who says that you have to pair basic hair with a major outfit; sometimes going big with both pays off beautifully.

Those with blue eyes often ask how they can get a smoky-eyed look that isn't overpowering; take a cue from RR and apply bronze shadow all over the eyelid, then line the waterline with black or dark brown eyeliner. Voila; a seductive look that is as easy as it is high-impact.

Your babe's platinum here—and she looks amazing. Reflecting on her memorable hair choices, Rose told The Coveteur “I have had black, blue, red, green, purple, white and grey hair. Every color that has a name I’ve had. I don’t think I have a favorite, probably dark.”

Extension alert! Proving that she looks just as magnificent with shoulder-length, Farrah-inspired hair, Ruby paired these lionlike locks with purple smoky eyes to match her gown.

Bright orange lips and black hair can sometimes look Halloween-y; on Rose, they just look chic.

And now, her almost-shaved-at-the-sides hair is bright red. Is there no hair color this woman cannot look amazing in?

Her hair is now a bronzey blonde; her makeup, as ever, is subtle yet flawless; her tattoos are on full display in an elegant backless dress; her cheekbones are gifts from god.

Long, blonde extensions may feel a little conventional on someone whose personal style is as edgy as Ruby's; never fear, she's twisted a few sections back at the sides for a faux-shaved effect. It's very Tank Girl Barbie, and we are HERE for it.

Though we're a bit burned out on the pastel purple hair trend, we have to admit that we love it on Ruby. With those dark, bold brows; she is slaying for the gods.

If this insanely fresh cut looks familiar, it's because it's similar to the one that her Orange is the New Black character, Stella Carlin, rocks with impunity on the show. This short cut combined with high-voltage bronze and black smoky eyes is truly immaculate.

Right before the early release of OITNB, Ruby cut her hair into this daring black bowl cut. Paired with dusty rose lips and pink cheeks, it's an absolutely perfect androgynous combination.

This role has truly been Ruby's US breakthrough, showcasing another one of her talents—as though being an award-winning TV host, DJ, singer and designer aren't enough, she's also an amazing actor. “Physically and mannerisms-wise, we’re very similar,” Rose told Vanity Fair. “Stella’s very androgynous and comfortable in her skin,” she continues. “But I have insecurities, and I get shy, nervous. Whereas Stella doesn't really give a fuck.”

With short hair and deep orange lips, Ruby's happiness radiates out of her every pore. She truly knows that beauty isn't just about buying lipstick, it's a tool with which we make ourselves. "I feel like I'm a boy, but I don't feel like I should've been born with different parts of my body or anything like that," she told The Guardian. "I feel like it's just all in how I dress and how I talk and how I look and feel, and that makes me happy." And that makes us happy, too; we love you, Ruby!
