A quick smoky eye has always seemed like a kind of oxymoron to me. With the blending of so many colors, it’s never been something I can do on a rushed morning. However, after receiving quick tips from celebrity makeup artist and Neutrogena Brand Ambassador Amy Oresman—she’s the mastermind behind the gorgeous looks on Hayden Panettiere and Emma Roberts—I’ve gotten the bold look down to two minutes. Here’s the quick how-to she gave me. (She’s even taught this simple trick to her celebs clients over skype when they’re out of town.)
First, start with a kohl pencil, lining the upper lash line. Oresman recommends applying liberally and not worrying about messing up—you’ll be blending soon enough. For a softer look, opt for a gray liner.
Next, use a crease-proof eye shadow in any color to blend the eyeliner up and out, bringing it up to the end of the lid. Leave the brow bone clean. Choose a cream shadow that blends easily but also dries in less than a minute, keeping the blend in place. Once the blending is complete, make sure the liner isn’t clearly defined on the lash line. You want it completely blended up to create that smoky effect.
