How Long Is Too Long When It Comes To Hair?

I was taken aback when I saw this photo of Adrien Brody and his girlfriend, Lara Lieto. She’s gorgeous, of course, but I was more intrigued by her hair that goes well past her tiny waist.

Most women have grown up with the idea that long hair is better. Magazines tell us men prefer it, ads tell us how to make it longer and stronger, and images of mermaids and princesses with long, flowing locks are plastered everywhere. But how long is too long?

For me, three factors determine how long a woman’s hair should be:

I remember watching an episode of The Oprah Show, and a 50-something ex-model was saying that she had recently made the decision to cut her hair. She explained that she was playing golf when a man in his early 20s saw her from behind and started hitting on her. When she turned around to face him, he was visibly surprised by her age and walked off. She said it was then that she realized she didn’t want to look like she was in her 20s, so she cut her hair and stopped worrying about keeping such a slim figure. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with being older and wearing your hair any way you want, but it’s a good reminder that you don’t have to try to look younger to wear your age well.

No, not yours — your hair’s! The problem with wearing super long hair is that it’s hard to keep it looking healthy. In storybooks Rapunzel might have looked beautiful, but in person she probably had split ends for days. Keep long hair healthy by scheduling trims every four to six weeks and take a vitamin, like biotin, to keep hair strong and gorgeous.

It may sound weird, but I think height plays a big part in deciding how long hair should be. If you put Lieto’s hair on me (I’m 5’3″) it would make me look like Cousin Itt. I think one of the reasons supermodels like Gisele Bundchen can wear such long hair is that their even longer legs balance out the proportions.

So what do you think? Does Lara Lieto’s length suit her, or should she schedule a cut?
