The image that pops into my head when I think about lip liner (something that as a beauty editor, I do indeed think about) isn’t a pretty one. I visualized dark-rimmed lips filled with light, frosty gloss—a ’90s trend that I thankfully never participated in, but was very popular nonetheless. While times have changed and today, most liners are intended to blend in with one’s lipstick as opposed to making a statement all their own, I’ve still never had the urge to wear one. That is until now, or this past Friday night to be more specific. While rifling through products for inspiration (something else I do as a beauty editor) I picked up an Urban Decay Gwen Stefani 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil ($20, urbandecay.com) and was reminded of something the rock star told Elle earlier this year:
“I don’t know how people put on lipstick without lip liner. If you want that sharp, defined look, you need it—especially with red, which is so glamorous.”
Because I had a party to go to and a red lip was fitting for the occasion, I decided to take the plunge. (Also, I’d be a fool not to take makeup advice from Gwen Stefani. She’s among our generation’s leading authorities on statement lips.)
The pencil’s creamy texture made application easy, and unlike the aforementioned liners I’ve always avoided, these are primers as well; after lining the lips, you completely fill them in, creating a base for your lipstick. I opted for the bright red 714 color and applied the matching Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Lipstick ($12, sephora.com) over it.
Just as Stefani assured, the look was sharp. Defined.
Glamorous. What I worried would come off as antiquated ended up being incredibly modern, and after hours of talking and dancing and sipping cocktails, my color was still in place.
So I stand corrected: Not all lip liners are reminiscent of a regrettable ’90s craze. Those of this variety now have a fan in me.
