When I saw Lea Michele’s braid at the Fox All Star Party earlier this week, I quickly tried to recreate it myself. But Dove Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend, who created the look, went with such a unique take on the side braid that I had to ask him for the steps!

“Lea is always pushing me to be as creative as I can be and that really inspires me,” Townsend said. “For the Fox TCA this week, I wanted Lea to have a summertime hairstyle that was young and cool, and that would also show off her gorgeous backless Pucci dress.”

Here, he gave us an easier version of the style so you (and I!) can create it at home. Although it looks a little confusing, it doesn’t require any French braids so even the least talented braiders can get it right!

Step 1: Townsend added a few drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum ($6.99, to damp hair and then blow dried with a large round brush, to start with a smooth texture.

Step 2: He then sprayed Dove Style+Care Flexible Hold Hairspray ($4.89, on a flat brush and spread throughout the hair to give hair shine and hold.

Step 3: Now, onto the braid! First, he separated the hair into three sections: back and two sides. Then he separated the back section into three uneven pieces and braided each, securing with elastics.

Step 4: “Next, I added a small braid to each of the side sections and then gathered the braids and the straight hair from the side sections behind Lea’s left ear and wrapped the hair around the braid, securing with bobby bins as I wrapped the hair.” He used small French hair pins to pull the hair into place so he could hide the elastics. Don’t have the hair pins? Townsend recommends using ribbons instead.

Step 5: He applied Dove Style+Care Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray ($4.49, to add texture to the side braid and keep hair in place.

What do you think of Townsend’s take on the side braid?
