Eye of the Beholder

Laney

Super hipster/fashion assistant Janice Chou is my music guru. She makes me mixes and tells what to say so I sound like I know what I’m talking about. So when she came to me at 8 am Wednesday with her latest beauty woe, I set about finding her an answer right away. Janice wants to know how to correctly apply eyeliner, something that quite honestly, has always been difficult for me as well. The truth of the matter is that everyone should apply it differently depending on their eye shape. That said, below are some general guidelines:

First, apply eye shadow. I like to use a soft pink but you should use whatever looks best with your skin tone.

Position your lining device. Hold the lining device as you do a pen or pencil. Turn your hand so the applicator tip is parallel to your eyelid.

If you are in the beginning stages of makeup application, do not use liquid eyeliner. It’s pretty tricky. Instead start with a soft eyeliner pencil.

Step-1. Using an eyeliner pencil, run the pencil above the upper eyelid lashes as close to the lash line as possible. At first, it is best to only line directly above where the lashes are growing and do not extend your line too close to the inner corner of the eye.

Step-2. When you have finished lining, lightly smudge the line you just drew. Mostly pencils have a foam rubber smudger on one end. Smudging softens some of the harshness the line may have. A Q-tip works just as well.

Step-3. After you line and smudge, use an angled brush and run a coat of the dark eye shadow over the eyeliner. Do this if the line looks like it stands out too much This will soften it and is a “must do” step for liquid liner.
