The Emmys are TV’s biggest night, and while we love watching who wins, we’re more interested in who went all out on the red carpet. Nina Dobrev definitely brought it, wearing the signature color of the night, sexy red, and the hot hairstyle trend, retro-glam.
Deep side-parts paired with Veronica Lake-inspired waves were all over the Emmys red carpet, seen on hairstyles both short and long. To get the look, we asked celebrity hairstylist Andy Lecompte to share his tips on creating glamor girl curls at home.
“She looks like Jessica Rabbit and I love it. Forties waves are a really glamorous way to dress up your look,” he says. To get this Veronica Lake-inspired look, Lecompte says to first set hair with hot rollers to create a curl base. “You want to have some extra curl because you’re going to be brushing through your hair,” says Lecompte. Then, finger comb Wella Pearl Style Styling Gel throughout the hair to create hold.
Next, create a a deep side-part, then comb one side of your hair back using more gel. To accentuate waves and create the finger curl effect, Lecompte says to take a dab of gel on your hands and, taking a clip, form a distinct wave and clip it in place, smoothing gel into the wave as you go. Then, add another clip about two inches down your hair, continuing until you get to the end of your hair. Let set for 20 minutes, then remove clips, comb through and finger style. You want the waves to be soft and well-formed. Spray with hairspray to hold.
While we loved Nina’s hairstyle, she wasn’t the only one who went retro on the red carpet. Here are some of our favorite interpretations of this gorgeous look.

Julia Stiles opted for a bit more of a low-key interpretation of the trend, keeping her curls less voluminous. The sleeker, more defined curls of her style makes this a much more modern interpretation of the retro trend.

Sofia Vergara embraced her va-va-voom on-screen persona with these super-sexy waves. She opted for a softer, more-brushed through style, which gave her lots of sultry volume.
