Deborah Lippmann’s black and white polka dot nails were all the rage at Kate Spade’s Spring 2012 show, so we were hoping that she was going to up the ante on the look this season. We weren’t disappointed. For 2013, the nail guru created a gingham print in a mix of colors on a sexy stiletto nail. “The nails are really poppy and fun – very Kate Spade,” said Deborah. The best part about these playful nails are that they are so easy to recreate at home. Check out the step by step tutorial and see for yourself!

Step 1: For the base, Deborah started with two coats of Amazing Grace, an opaque pure white shade. Make sure the base color is completely dry before you move on to the second step.

Step 2: Cut three thin strips of tape and place them on your nail horizontally parallel to each other. Make sure you leave an even amount of space in between each strip.

Step 3: Cut three more (longer) strips and place them vertically on top of your existing strips. The tape should create a checkered design on your nail. If your nail is too small for three strips, use two!

Step 4: Pick a bright color for the gingham print. Deborah used a range of different shades like I Kissed a Girl (a matte pink), My Prerogative (a royal blue), and Lara’s Theme (an orange) on the models. Once you have a color picked out, paint two coats over the tape and let it dry completely.

Step 5: Gently peel the tape off one layer at a time and top it all off with a high-shine top coat.

And, voila! You’ve got yourself Kate Spade-inspired gingham nails! We’d love to see them so don’t forget to tweet us @BeautyHigh with the hashtag #NailCall to be featured on the site for Tuesday’s Nail Call.
