How to Get the Perfect Ballerina Bun

ballerina bun

Everywhere we look lately, we’re seeing ballerina buns, which have shifted from the choice hairstyle of dancers to a go-to hairstyle for ladies that’s both simple and chic. (Added bonus: these buns are Pinterest gold.) Plus, the ballerina bun is one of the best hairstyles for dirty hair – no one will know you’re extending your blowout a few days past it’s expiration date, because your hair looks chic and effortless. Or better yet, once you’ve gotten this style down, it can be your 5-minute go-to in those mornings that you’re running late but can’t look the part – go for the ballerina bun and a signature lip, and no one will be any wiser.

Considering the ballerina bun is such a staple, isn’t it high time you learned how to nail the look? Below, we’ve mapped out an attack plan to help you get the perfect ballerina bun. We promise it’s not nearly as intimidating as it looks.

Step 1: Begin with straight hair. You can opt to wear your hair curly, but your ballerina bun won’t look as slick and sleek as all of those pictures you’ve been ‘liking’ on social media.
Step 2: Brush your hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic at the top of your head. Make sure there aren’t any bumps in your hair.
Step 3:
Apply mousse (smaller than the size of a golf ball) to the lengths of your ponytail, and blow dry. The mousse will give your hair major hold and allows for virtually no flyaways in your bun.
Step 4:
Put a hair donut at the base of your ponytail and begin wrapping your hair around the donut, securing with hair pins to keep hair in place. Continue pinning until your hair is completely covering the donut and wrap under the base.
Step 5: Apply a spritz of hairspray to keep the bun in place and make sure there aren’t any loose hairs getting out. You’re done!
