Mesh? Check. Color? Check. Only the tallest glamazons one will ever see? Double Check. This year, designer Custo Dalmau showed an array of pretty popsicle shades for Custo Barcelona which had heads turning in a big way. The combination of tough and delicate was refreshing to see come down the runway, and especially loved the contrast between the silhouettes and the individual details. We got an advance peek of the collection backstage, which sparked our interest to see how this color-splashed surprise of a collection came to be. We sat down — er, stood up — and spoke to the main man himself.
StyleCaster: When you put this collection together, what was going through your head?
Custo Dalmau: We had started this project 32 years ago in Barcelona and in each collection, the priority for us is to develop a product that respects our DNA in order for our client to recognize the product without reading the name on the label.
And who is the Custo Barcelona woman?
It’s a person that likes to express her individuality, who is young and sweet, and understands fashion with a sense of humor and irony.
What is your favorite part about this collection?
The challenge of trying to be yourself in a very fresh and attractive way.
It was clearly no challenge for Custo to deliver such a fun and fantasy-filled collection, though we were especially impressed that it all felt like something we could wear in “real life.” Notes were taken, hints were given, and pieces will be owned. We definitely have a spring shopping list to cater to. Take a look through the gallery to see a preview of the collection as well as some great backstage beauty looks.
