Fireworks have been used for centuries across the globe as a form of celebration, dating back to 7th century China when they were believed to be invented.
Every year fireworks displays around the world seem to get bigger and better. WASHINGTON DC, JULY 4
Where else is better to celebrate Independence Day than in The Capitol? Located at The National Mall you can enjoy the scenery of beautiful monuments and the US capitol buildings in the background. The fireworks used for this display are predominately large shells and the magnificent illusion of these fireworks is that they appear to be exploding above the Washington Memorial. The fireworks are accompanied by two soundtracks, one is a pre-recorded score and the National Symphony Orchestra plays the other live.
PARIS, JULY 14
Every July 14th Paris celebrates Bastille Day to mark the storming of the Bastille prison, which was a major event in the French Revolution. Similar to Independence Day in the US, this is a festive event that uses its firework display to celebrate patriotism across the city of Paris. Thousands of people flock to the Eiffel Tower and Champs de Mars Gardens to view the fireworks which actually use the Eiffel Tower as a prop, lighting it up to add to the colorful ceremony.
BOSTON, JULY 4
Well known for their magical fourth of July fireworks display, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular stretches over four barges that are needed to launch this 21-minute pyrotechnic extravaganza. Roughly 500,000 people flock to the Charles River Esplanade to witness the event.
DUBAI, DECEMBER 31
The world’s tallest and biggest firework display happens every New Years Eve in Dubai, and no expense is spared. At 2,716 feet tall, the Burj Khalifa is the worlds tallest building and is actually the centerpiece for the Downtown Dubai firework display. The fireworks cascade from the building in many different forms often in the coloring of the United Arab Emirates flag.
CANNES, VARIOUS DATES MARCH-AUGUST
The Cannes Firework Festival stretches over a total of six evenings in the summer at the Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique that was created to promote every kind of pyro musical shows. Competitors take to Cannes to showcase their work of art of fireworks. Each fireworks display runs for a duration of 25 minutes and roughly 200,000 visitors come to watch. The winner of this competition receives the ‘Vestale d’argent’ after being judged by a jury.
ADDISON TEXAS, JULY 4
Rated as the best place to watch the 4th of July fireworks in the country by the American Pyrotechnics Association, this nationally recognized show can be seen from anywhere in Addison. It lasts 30 minutes and is choreographed to music and simulcast on the radio.
LONDON, DECEMBER 31
London is world renowned for putting on an amazing show every New Year's Eve featuring the London Eye. The eleven-minute display is shorter than most but is by no means less extravagant, especially considering the fireworks are launched off the 135-foot big wheel.
NEW YORK CITY, JULY 4
The Macy’s fourth of July firework show features more than 40,000 shells exploding at a rate of more than 1,500 a minute. The 26-minute display sets off from six barges from 18th street all the way to 43rd street along the Hudson River.
RIO DE JANEIRO, DECEMBER 31
This past New Year's Eve Brazil broke records, hosting the the biggest New Year's Eve party ever. More than two million party goers were on Copacabana beach watching a firework display that lasted 20 minutes.
SYDNEY, DECEMBER 31
Sydney's world famous New Year's Eve fireworks draw in more than 1.5 million visitors from across the globe, who come to the shores of the city harbor to watch the display which is always centered around a theme, and featuring the Harbor Bridge.
LOUISVILLE KENTUCKY, APRIL 20
"Thunder Over Louisville" is the annual kickoff event for the Kentucky Derby Festival. It is the largest annual fireworks display in all of North America and lasts for around 30 minutes. Eight 400-foot barges launch the fireworks from both side of the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge and also from the actual bridge.
VANCOUVER, JULY 27
The annual celebration of fireworks called Festival of Lights is one of Vancouver’s most popular summer events. Located in the city’s English Bay area at the end of July, this fireworks display draws in a crowd of over a million spectators.
DISNEY WORLD, JULY 4
No one does cheese like Disney World and on the fourth of July the fireworkS display won’t disappoint. This captivating patriotic extravaganza, at the Magic Kingdom in Florida, blazes fireworks over the Cinderella Castle to a musical playlist that will have you and your inner child mesmerized.
SHEFFIELD ENGLAND, NOVEMBER 5
Bonfire Night is a British festival that originated from the Gunpowder plot of 1605, when a man named Guy Fawkes was caught trying to blow up the House of Lords. November 5th was originally a celebration of the King’s survival with people burning a fake ‘Guy’ on a bonfire with fireworks and dancing. Nowadays people don’t tend to like celebrating the execution of Guy Fawkes, however they still celebrate Bonfire Night with multiple displays of fireworks. In Sheffield, the event attracts over 18,000 spectators all wanting to witness the fireworks bonanza.
HONG KONG, OCTOBER 1
October 1st is Chinese National Day to celebrate the year of the handover of Hong Kong from British hands to China's. More than four tons of fireworks, costing around $8 million, are let off into the sky illuminating Hong Kong’s stunning skyline.
